Katy Perry "Last Friday Night" 80s Makeup Tutorial

When Sam Chapman of Pixiwoo announced she was creating a line of makeup brushes with Real Techniques, I knew they were something I just had to have. Her assurance that they would be affordable for all was a bonus, and to be honest had they been high-end brushes with high-end prices I wouldn't have objected.

After they arrived on Friday, I have spent the last two days obsessing over them and testing them out. While its too early to formulate my thoughts on them just yet, I'm pretty impressed by them. If you would like a review on them, let me know! Using synthetic taklon bristles in each brush means that they are 100% cruelty free. And they're "soft fibers help create a flawless, high-definition finish in any type of light – from sunlight to harsh indoor lighting". While the prices were slightly more than the American prices, they are very affordable at £18.99/22euro for a set.

Mega Haul, New Vid, and I'm BACK!

L'Oreal products!

I was shocked to receive this package of makeup the other day from BzzAgent! I'd filled out a screener weeks ago and immediately forgot, so I didn't expect to get cool stuff in the mail! BzzAgent is a community where you get to sample things and spread the word about it. Up until now I've received small things like a Redbox rental code, or free note cards from Expressionery - but this is right up my alley and super exciting! :)

In the package was L'Oreal's "The One Sweep" eye shadow and "Double Extend Eye Illuminator" mascara, both formulated for brown eyes. The One Sweep eye shadow has an extra-large brush that's supposed to be like 3 eyeshadow steps in one. The Double Extend mascara is double-ended - one side is black mascara, and the other side is a top coat colored to illuminate your eyes based on your eye color.

Review: Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Correcting Powder

Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free Mineral Correcting Powder

Price: MSRP $13.95. $11.99 at Harmon’s, with a $3-off peelie coupon on packaging. Physician’s Formula was also on sale at Harmon’s in February for an additional $2 off, making the total only $6.99.

Claims: “Versatile powder color corrects the most common skin imperfections, smoothes skin texture and evens out skin tone. All colors blend together to create a perfect canvas finish: Pink brightens, Green tones down redness and Yellow adds warmth. High-tech Japanese formula delivers a natural-looking finish that won't cake, crease or settle into fine lines.”

Ingredients: Mica, boron nitride, mineral oil, aluminum distearate, petrolatum, tocopherol, phenoxyethanol. May contain: titanium dioxide, iron oxides, carmine, ultramarines

Review: I’d seen a few advertisements for this product lately, and lord knows I need all the color-correcting I can get. So when I saw a new display at Harmon’s (and a generous discount from the normal price) I snatched it up without much of a second glance. It proudly proclaims itself as talc-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free, etc, which seems like the recipe to a perfect product.

When I finally got around to opening the packaging and getting a good look at the ingredients, I found two ingredients I never thought I’d see in powder: mineral oil and petrolatum. Shock! Horror! Everyone knows you’re not supposed to put mineral oil and petrolatum on your face! That’s just a bunch of clogged pored waiting to happen! Regardless, I decided to give it a shot and used it anyway.

I’ve been using it every day for nearly a month now. Does it cover my redness? No. Does it brighten my skin? No. Does it add warmth? No. Does it cake, crease, or settle into fine lines? Yes, yes, and yes! I don’t know if I’ve ever used a powder this bad before, and I’m not sure why I continue to use it.

The powder itself is pressed, but upon brushing it, comes off in large granules – much bigger particles than your average powder. It can make a mess over your clothes or whatever surface you’re applying it near if you're not careful.

Immediately upon application, it looks very powdery and very pale. I bought the translucent shade (I am fair and generally use the lightest shade of every makeup) yet it’s not really “translucent”, more like “opaque white” – definitely not a human skin color unless you’re going for the geisha or vampire look. It gives me a ghostly aura, and is especially powdery on and around my nose. It doesn’t blend in, even with a lot of brushing or rubbing. The powdery pale look goes away after a while, but it cakes around blemishes and settles in the creases of my eyelids in big cakey chunks by mid-day, so much that I have to wipe it off.

 No one needs to see my face this close up, but this is the unnatural powdery finish I'm left with after application (no other makeup on).

The one perk might be that, as powdery as it is, it doesn’t feel powdery or drying at all – probably because of the mineral oil and petrolatum. I haven’t been able to attribute any breakouts to the use of this product, which is a relief, but I’d stay away if petrochemicals usually bother you. Actually, I’d just stay away from this stuff altogether.

Packaging:  Cute little compact with a clear top and double-layered design with a mirror and brush storage underneath. The brush is adorable in pale pink, yellow, and green, but is unfortunately so rough and scratchy I stopped using it after the first try.

 Overall rating: D – HUGE disappointment :(

Would purchase again? No

Overview: MAC Paintpots

Hi Girls!!

I thought I'd start a mini-series, where I go over my collection of certain products... products that I have a few of, but not quite enough to warrant a full YT video!

The first product is MAC's paintpot! As you can see in the photos, I have 5 of them: Painterly, Girl Friendly, Bare Study, Constructivist, and Moss Scape.

You can't really tell from the photos, but I've made quite a dent in my Painterly! My second most-used is Constructivist, while the others don't see quite as much use. Don't get me wrong, I love them all, but I'm most often doing neutral/brown looks, so those work best!

The main thing I like about Paintpots is their staying power. For full-day makeup, I still need UDPP, but if I'm only going to be out for a few hours, this is much more convenient, and easier to remove. I have pretty oily lids though, so if you have drier ones, they may stay all day!

What I also like, obviously, is that they provide a nice base for whatever eyeshadow I'm putting on. They make blending a lot easier, and they're sheer enough so that they enhance the colour of the eyeshadows, but they don't create a new colour. Some people may see this as a negative though, that they're not very vibrant. I'm very happy with their subtlety, though :)

Also a note on how long these babies last. I've had Painterly for two years, and it's still kicking. I always use a clean finger or brush to apply (usually a finger though!), and it has yet to change colour, consistency, or smell funny! I got Constructivist and Moss Scape at CCOs, and they're still going strong too. I had been cautioned against buying that type of thing at CCOs, but these have been totally fine! I store them all upside down... that keeps them from drying out, because gravity brings the moisture to the "top" of the product if it's upside down. Therefore... the whole product gets some moisture!

Next on my list are Rubenesque and Indianwood!

Beauty Books

Hi girls!

So today we had a "drive-by" Christmas with some family, and I got two "beauty" books from my lovely cousin. One is Bobbi Brown's "Beauty Evolution", and the other is Trish McEvoy's "The Power of Makeup". Both give suggestions and tips for faces/women of all ages, which is incredibly handy!

This girl's chin looks enormous...

Before today, I only had one other beauty book- Carmindy's "5 Minute Face", which I really liked.

So I've skimmed both books, but am not ready to give full reviews yet. Just thought I'd let you know that I've got some new reading material :)

Chloe loves bronzer?!

Hi girls!

So I'll admit right now... I'm a convert. I am now proud to say that I love bronzer.

What has brought on this monumental change, you may ask?

I finally broke down and got a decent bronzer (not, um, "inexpensive" like my Jane one).

Specifically, NARS Laguna bronzer.

I'll admit that the only reason I finally got this was because it was for free. Yes, free. Here in Canada, we have a lovely place called Shoppers Drug Mart, where you collect Optimum points. Once you get a boat-load of points (which is quite frequent for me and my mum, since Shoppers sells a lot of essentials!!), you can use the points as money. So, my mum and I had collected $170 worth of points. Shoppers has an off-shoot store called Murale which is strictly beauty, and you can use Optimum points there, so... we each got a few things (didn't use up ALL the points, though!).

So, my point is that Murale carries NARS, and I got this, and the NARS face primer.

NARS Laguna Bronzer... Oh wow. I never thought bronzers could be like this. But really my only other experience with bronzer was my Jane bronzer that was $5 (I use it in some of my videos, if you're interested in seeing it. Yuck.).

I was a little bit hesitant, because it seemed like this was one of those "trend" products that was being pushed on YT.

I was so wrong.

This bronzer is incredible. It's no secret that I am the palest person I know. So bronzer has always intimidated me a little. But using this, my face has NEVER looked "dirty", and I absolutely love the way the shade looks on my face and skin.

I think what is so flattering about this bronzer, on my skin at least, is the fact that it's brown, and not yellow-ish. It's straight-up brown/goldy, and it adds warmth to my skin without looking crazy. Yellow looks crazy against cool-toned skin. This looks perfect.

I use my big fluffy powder brush from POSH to apply this, and I love the application and coverage that gives. I sweep it into my cheek contours, then up onto my temples, then under the jawline, and blend everything out, all with the same brush. This has become my contour- I don't think I've used my MAC bone beige/emphasize duo since I bought this. Obviously there's always a time and place for contouring without the "bronze" effect, but since it's winter, I'll take all the warmth I can get!

There is a little bit of a sparkle to it in the pan, but I don't even notice it when it's on. I know shimmer can be a little off-putting to most people when they're considering a bronzer, but with this, there's nothing to worry about.

I can't believe I'm a daily bronzer-user now. Oh my, how the times have changed!!

Hello girls,

I just want to preface this by saying YES, I know I am a huge loserface. This past month has been literally non-stop crazy. I had a huge project going on, and when I wasn't physically working on that, I was thinking about it or planning something to do with it. So Youtube and my blog kind of fell by the wayside. Apologies.
My last class of the semester is Monday morning, and I had nothing to prepare for it, so I decided to take a few requests on Twitter and make a video or two this weekend. I ended up making one makeup tutorial- a Zooey Deschanel look, that would be great for Holiday parties. It's also got a cool, retro vibe to it.

I'm waiting for the video to upload... I had done it all through iMovie earlier today, but all of a sudden iMovie decided it wouldn't enjoy cooperating with me. It told me it had finished uploading and was published. Alas, it had not. I kept going to check on "My Videos" page to see if it would show up, but nope. If Youtube were a person, it would have been giving me a really good "wtf?" face.

Anyway.
Here are some preview photos of the look. As always, much more vibrant in person, and I am (slightly) less awkward in person, too, so it generally looks better... in person! Haha. If you look closely, you'll see a very faint, subtle wing to the eyeliner (I used black eyeshadow and a flat brush to do it!). I noticed Zooey doing this on a few occasions, so I thought it would be an interesting detail to include. It keeps the retro feel, but also makes it modern and not cliche or too crazy!

Red lips are slightly frightening...

A less scary lipstick option... me likey! But my bangs were not cooperating, sadly!

Stila "Pretty In Paris" Travel Palette

 I bought this palette about a month ago from Murale (a Canadian store!), but I've seen more Shoppers beauty boutiques carrying Stila now, so these travel palettes may be easier to get your hands on. It was only $13!

Let's start with the eyeshadows. From Top L-R: Crepe, Cherie, Jolie, Chocolat.
I will say that the pigmentation for these shadows aren't Stila's best effort.
But they do make a really really nice smokey eye for daytime, because they're not obnoxiously pink (which I found to be the case for the "Road to Radiance" travel palette). They're more cranberry/dusty brown, so definitely more wearable and versatile.

The Convertible Color is called Rosebud. It looks a bit daunting on its own, and as a pale girl, I was a little scared. But, it actually works. It's a deep pink, but it looks lovely on pale skin (when applied sparingly, of course!). I have yet to try it on my lips though! It also works really well as a complement to the eyeshadow colours to create a really nice fall/autumn look: a light smokey eye, flushed cheeks, and bare lips.

So, I'd say this palette is worth $13 for sure. I wouldn't say the same for the "Road to Radiance" one though, and it seems most people on Sephora.com feel the same way! I've heard that a new palette will be coming out every month, so that's exciting! Can't wait to see the next one!

My Birthday Makeup- Purples with Wet 'n' Wild

I just want to thank all of you so much for the kind birthday wishes again!  You're incredibly sweet and reading them has made my day even better.  It was pretty low-key, nothing too eventful, but for dinner 15 of my friends and I went out to dinner- definitely the most fun thing I did!  They're all people from my floor, so it was overall just a great time.
I also really appreciate all the ideas you guys had for me on how to do my makeup.  I loved the idea of doing something retro-inspired, but I don't know, I really fail at applying liquid/gel liner and I wanted to do something I could easily pull off.  So I went with a look I've actually done before, using my Wet 'n' Wild palette in Lust (You can see my original look using it HERE).

It was pretty dark especially for something I was planning to wear during the day as well as evening, but I think it worked out fine.

What I used:

- VS Pro eyeshadow primer

- Wet 'n' Wild eyeshadow palette in Lust (I did the same application as I did in the original post I featured this in, link above)

- L'Oreal Bare Naturale mascara, L'Oreal Extra Volume Collagen mascara on top

It's awesome that a 6-color eyeshadow palette can serve as your entire look!  I first applied the light matte pink as my all over color, then the shimmery cream as my highlight.  Then I applied the dark shimmery purple/gray in my outer crease.  Over that I applied the medium matte purple and blended it onto my lid. On top of those two, I lightly dusted the shimmery gray to add some sparkle.  With the dark matte purple I lined my upper and lower lash lines.  Finally, I went in my inner corners and applied the shimmery cream color, and then dusted the light matte pink over the entire eyelid to lighten up the colors a bit.

I have a small haul post coming soon.  :)  I went to ULTA today and saw that they have a TON of clearance/sale items- I purchased one thing, but I'm going back tomorrow with my $3.50/$10.00 coupon so I can buy more!

Question: Makeup for My Birthday?

Hey guys, I apologize for not having a new makeup-related post up this morning, but I do have a question for you all.  I've been in a bit of a makeup rut the last week or so.  I just don't know what kinds of looks to do lately, so I end up either pairing random colors together or using purples which, for me, is nothing different.
My birthday is this Saturday and I want to do something pretty but put-together.  That doesn't sound too hard, I know, but seeing how I've been lately it could be a challenge!  If you guys have any EOTDs, LOTDs, tutorials, or anything on a makeup look you'd recommend, please let me know.

In My School Makeup Bag

These kind of "back to school" posts have been going around lately, and it got me thinking.  With my school schedule next year I probably won't carry a specific makeup "bag", but I'll definitely carry a lip balm and extra eyeliner on me.  All my classes except one (Which is a freshmen seminar course) meet only once a week for almost three hours, so I won't be in one place for half the day.  In any rate, these are what I would bring with me if I chose to.

Things I would bring, in general:

A cosmetic bag (This is an old MAC one I always use for traveling- I got this as a birthday or Christmas present), a nude/versatile lip gloss, stick blush, neutral eyeshadow palette, 'colorful' eyeshadow palette, eyeshadow brush, eyeliner/highlighter pencil duo, eyeliner with smudge tip, small kabuki brush.

The following are just my picks from my makeup collection.  I wrote them out in general ^^ up above, because I think just having these basic items is what's important.

Nude lipgloss: Revlon Super Lustrous lip gloss in Peach Petal- I actually wanted to feature Pink Whisper here, as I feel that one is more versatile, but I can't find it!  My sister used it for her photoshoot last week so I'm guessing she put it somewhere.  Anyway, a nude lip gloss is a nice pick for everyday looks.

Cream stick blush: N.Y.C. Blushable Creme Stick blush in Plaza Pink- Having a brush in stick-form reduces the number of travel brushes you need to bring with you.  And since I don't currently have any, this is a necessity!

Colorful eyeshadow palette: ELF eyeshadow quad in Silver Lining- I love the blue in this quad for lining my eyes, and the dark grey/black is perfect for making a smoky look.

Neutral eyeshadow palette: Wet 'n' Wild eyeshadow palette in Vanity- This palette had to be featured!  Six shades of brown that will work for almost everyone.  This is perfect, IMO, for doing a quick neutral look on the go.

Highlighter/eyeliner duo pencil: Almay Bright Eyes eyeliner/highlighter duo- I really only use this when I'm traveling or on the go, and it's AWESOME for that!  You really only need this and some mascara to do a basic look.  

Eyeshadow brush: This is just one that came with an ELF eyeshadow set I got last year at Target- it has a black eyeliner pencil on the opposite end.  I hate the eyeliner, but I use this brush for travel because it's one of my inexpensive brushes (Translation: I don't care if it gets messed up in my bag).

Eyeliner with smudge tip: Neutrogena Nourishing eyeliner in Plum Drop- I love this eyeliner, and the smudge-tip end is so versatile.  You can use it to smudge your liner, and smudge eyeshadow into your lower lash line.  

Small kabuki brush- This is the kabuki brush that comes with the Maybelline Mineral Power powder foundation.  It's scratchy- not soft at all- but it does the job when I need to buff in powder.  This is just working for me while I can find another inexpensive, small kabuki brush.  But like my eyeshadow brush, I save this for travel because I don't care if it gets smooshed.  ;)

What are your picks for 'back to school' makeup bags?  

(PS, I think mascara is a MUST.  The only reason I didn't feature it in my bag is because I typically don't leave the house without it.  And I don't like to do touch ups to mascara.  But if you're in a hurry, I'd definitely say throw in a mascara with your makeup essentials!)

Birthday Beauty Wishlist

My birthday isn't until September 11.  I'm definitely jumping the gun and planning early, but I figure it's best to give my family/boyfriend ideas sooner than later.  :)  The main reason I'm thinking so far in advance, though, is because I leave for college August 26, so we'll be celebrating early.  We're thinking of doing it when my sister comes to visit the beginning of August (At least my family and I).
So with my love for makeup, naturally there are many things on my mental wishlist.  These are a few things from that list.

MAC 219 pencil brush- This one is the brush I want most.  I've seen Christine at Temptalia use it several times during her video tutorials, and it would be just perfect for crease work and lower lash lining.

MAC 266 small angle brush- I don't have any good angle brushes, so this would be a good addition to my collection.  I love how steep the angle is.

MAC 217 blending brush- The 224 blending brush is one I've had since I first started doing makeup, and it's great for blending out color.  It doesn't deposit very well, though.  This one is a little denser and smaller.

Viva la Juicy perfume- I've talked about my love affair with this perfume before.  My sister said she would get me a perfume I really love for my birthday, so this is the one I'm asking for.  I know it's more expensive, though, so I'm not asking for the big bottle.  A rollerball is a-ok with me!  I just love this scent and never spend much on perfumes for myself, so it's a good thing for me to ask for for my birthday.

Coastal Scents 88 Color palette- I know this one is very hyped-up, maybe even over-hyped, but I've seen so many beautiful EOTD's with it and I just want it so badly.

MAC or any pigment- Ever since I received pigment samples from Winnie, I've just fallen head-over-heels for them.  This is something that I'd rather get in person, so I can test out the colors, and I'll have to wait until I go to school (I'm going to Columbia College Chicago) to do that.  There aren't any MAC counters in the state I live in.

That's all for now, although I would be happy to receive even a Target or Walmart giftcard too, haha.  I do love drugstore makeup!

How I Store My Makeup

I've been on the look-out for a good storage container to put all my makeup in.  Preferably something that could sit on my bathroom counter, with a few levels (To save space) and pull-out drawers.  The only problem with everything I've seen lately is they're too big for my bathroom.  I wanted an organizer that could sit out on my counter without taking up all of the room.
Prior to today, I've stored all the makeup I like and use regularly in a makeup organizing tray in a drawer under my sink (Like at hip-level).  Then I put all the makeup I don't use regularly but still want to keep in a plastic bin in the cupboard right below that drawer.
But then I found this at Target today:

Perfect!  It's large enough to store my most-used makeup in, but not too big that it won't fit on my counter.  There are three stackable compartments.  You pop off the side snaps to unstack them.

I put all my eyeshadows in the top one, and my blushes in the bottom:

And then my face makeup is in the middle one:

Ta-da!

As for the organizer sitting in my drawer, I put the makeup I don't use everyday but still want to keep in there (Mainly eyeshadows).  I also decided to store my mascaras, eyeliners, tools, and lipglosses/lipsticks there:

Lastly these are my brushes, on the other side of my sink.  I just keep them in an old water cup we used to have in our upstairs bathroom.  

My new makeup container will sit on the side of the sink opposite of my brushes, OR the floor if that doesn't work haha.  Currently I have a little plastic basket on that side that I keep all my skin products in (For washing my face, moisturizing, makeup removing, etc), so I'll need to find another place for that.  Or maybe the two organizers can become friends and share the area, right?

1) On a completely unrelated topic, look at what happened to my new Victoria's Secret eyeshadow palette (The one I purchased at the Semi-annual sale and did my most recent purple EOTD with):

It fell out of my makeup drawer and hit my tile floor!  I was so mad.  Luckily it's not completely destroyed...

2) And another stupid thing I did on Tuesday, but just noticed it while I was in the shower this morning:

LOL.  So there I was at Target, thinking, "I need new shampoo.  Oh!  I should try the new Pantene stuff."  So I decide to get the kind for fine hair (I probably should've gone with the kind for medium-thick hair, but I wanted the volume stuff), and I'm looking at the different types.  They have one to get "Fragile to Strong" hair, and another to get "Flat to Volume" hair.  I don't know how I ended up with THESE, one Fragile to Strong conditioner and one Flat to Volume 2 in 1.  I never use 2 in 1, haha.  Whoops!  

3) Anyway, I'm going with my boyfriend to his hometown today/tonight.  It's out in the country, but it's also on a lake, so we're going to go swimming/to the beach and stuffs.  This is the first time so far this summer that I've really had to "summer-proof" my makeup.  Unfortunately I don't have waterproof mascara, but I'm wearing my Maybelline Mineral Power powder foundation on my face, Benefit High Beam on my browbones and cheekbones, and then just some eyeliner (My trusty Clinique Quickliner) along with mascara.  

I rarely wear this little makeup, and I practically ALWAYS wear eyeshadow.  But I think it'll do me just fine considering it's going to be 90+ degrees and 70% humidity.  Lovely!  :)

4) This didn't occur to me until today, but has anyone ever tried using paint brushes as makeup brushes? I wouldn't like throw out all my makeup brushes and only use paint brushes, but maybe having a few to complete my collection.  There are a few kinds of brushes I would like to have but don't want to dish out $$ on (Hobby Lobby has some decent prices, so I was thinking of checking out their selection).  Have you ever used paint brushes for makeup?
